Arsene Wenger’s side have surprised many of their critics by getting off to a buoyant start with four wins from four games, but a trip to Old Trafford to take on the defending Premier League champions will be seen as the first true test of their credentials.

Sceptics will say that, in sweeping aside the opposition with 15 goals in four games, Arsenal have had a relatively easy ride thus far. They caught Everton in Lescott-induced disarray on the opening day and duly hit them for six, then proved far too good for Celtic over two legs in the Champions League, and encountered only moderate resistance from troubled Portsmouth at the Emirates last weekend. United on their own patch represents a much sterner challenge.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed-up fellow Red Devil, Michael Owen, in the wake of criticism surrounding the hitman’s scoring prowess.

The monolithic centre-back claims that Owen’s time will come, and that his first competitive goal for United against Wigan will go far in spurring the striker on to bigger things.

Fergie: United Learnt From Burnley Defeat

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claims that, although no one at the club anticipated losing 1-0 at Burnley last week, the lessons learned were valuable, and he knew that his players would react positively to the shock because of their considerable experience.

United followed up the defeat with a 5-0 battering of Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium at the weekend, and showed that lessons had indeed been absorbed from their previous trip across Lancashire.
