Manchester United’s reserve goalkeeper Ben Foster has committed his future to the Old Trafford outfit by signing a new contract that expires in 2013.
Foster is still playing understudy to No.1 glovesman Edwin van der Sar, but has been a surprise inclusion in England manager Fabio Capello’s Three Lions squads. There was an increasing amount of credible speculation that suggested Foster could be keen on leaving United, albeit on a temporary basis, in order to secure his place in Capello’s World Cup squad.
The 26-year-old, though, has signalled his intent on establishing himself in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team plans by penning the new deal. He told the club’s official website:
“I’m really happy to commit my future to the club.
“The team spirit here is fantastic and working along side Edwin and Tomasz [Kuszczak] has been a great influence on my career.”
Ferguson added:
“We are delighted that Ben has signed a new four-year deal.
“Ben is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin van der Sar.”
Van der Sar is expected to retire at the end of the coming season.
